Value of Internships to Motorsports Industry

Internships are effective ways for motorsports employers to become engaged in the academic community, and are mutually beneficial relationships. Organizations can help shape the direction of the industry by developing the next generation of leadership. Students learn by doing, develop contacts, and become prepared for a career in the industry.

Value of Internships to the Motorsports Industry:

• Interns bring new, fresh ideas and energy into the organization
• Employers develop a talent pool to hire from – interns are trained in organizational process, procedures, and culture and provide cost effective recruiting
• Interns bring a level of familiarity and expertise in technology, specifically with social media networks
• Employers shape and develop the next generation of industry leadership
• Interns provide cost-effective labor (there are some rules regarding payment)
• Connect the industry to educational institutions to benefit the community as a whole

To begin the process of hosting a student intern, follow these steps

1. Contact a local college and speak with their Career Services department or academic coordinator of internships. They will explain their requirements and process for hosting an intern, and will provide assistance to get started.

2. Create an internship job description. This is vital as it creates a structured position for the intern; this structure tells the intern exactly what their responsibilities and expectations are, and ensures the employer has meaningful work for the intern.

3. Accept resumes and interview candidates. Employers should follow their normal hiring procedures – select the candidate that best fits your position.

4. Complete any required paperwork from the college and adhere to the responsibilities as a host intern, as determined by the college.

5. Put the intern to work, while remaining focused on their learning about the position, the organization, and the industry.
